LAHORE: Ameer, Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan, Syed Munawar Hasan, has expressed deep concern over the setting aside of Dr Shakil Afridi’s sentence, the key player in the US operation in Abboatabad to track down Al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden.

He has called upon the government to register a treason case against Shakil Afridi accused, and try him accordingly.
Commenting on the reports that the conviction of Dr Shakil Afridi had been set aside and his case had been sent to the Political Agent for retrial, the JI Ameer said that Shakil Afridi had only been tried for collusion with outlawed terrorist organizations including Mangal Bagh. He said the accused was never charged with helping the US operation at Abbotabad, which was a clear case of treason.

Syed Munawar Hasan said it was the trickery of the previous government that Shakil Afridi’s actual crime was intentionally hidden and a minor case was framed against him while the whole nation was deceived only to provide benefit to a US tool.

He said it was the responsibility of the present government to frame a treason case against Shakil Afridi. He said the US was trying hard for Afridi’s release and handing over to the US, However, he said, the government should show courage and refuse to yield to the US pressure and try the traitor.
