Egypt’s FM hails role of OIC as main platform for joint Islamic actionAugust 15, 2018
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met here on Tuesday with Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed various regional developments and how to deal with the crises in many Muslim countries, the effects of which have some repercussions on the entire region. They stressed the need to bring about political solutions to these crises in order to strengthen the security and stability of the Islamic world.
Shoukry underscored the importance of the role played by the OIC as the main platform for joint Islamic action. He also affirmed Egypt’s keenness to support efforts aimed at developing the mechanisms of action in the Organization to serve the causes of the Islamic Ummah.
The minister expressed Egypt’s appreciation of the role played by the OIC secretary general and its support for his constructive ideas and initiatives to advance the functioning of the Organization. He also noted the importance of confronting any attempt to exploit the Organization and its various agencies to achieve self-interests that are not necessarily consistent with its supreme objectives and purposes.
The Egyptian top diplomat further underlined the importance of extending the bridges of cooperation and coordination between the OIC and Al-Azhar and its Observatory for Combating Extremism, with the view to supporting the issues of the Islamic world and confronting the phenomenon of Islamophobia. He confirmed Egypt’s keenness on constant consultation and coordination with the OIC chief and supporting him to carry out his duties, which are eventually in the interest of the Organization.
For his part, Secretary General Al-Othaimeen reviewed the initiatives and projects currently being carried out by the OIC to activate and support cooperation among Islamic countries in various fields. He extended gratitude to Egypt for strengthening the role of the OIC and supporting its activities.
