Peshawar: Caretaker Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Justice (R) Tariq Pervez Khan has said that holding of free , fair and impartial elections in a peaceful environment in the province is the constitutional obligation of the caretaker set up adding that no stone would be left unturned in the discharge of this obligation in an admirable manner.

He expressed these views while chairing the first meeting of the caretaker provincial cabinet in Peshawar on Thursday. The meeting reviewed in detail the preparations of provincial election commission and other concerned departments for the upcoming general elections and the law and order situation in the province with particular reference to the general elections.

Besides members of the caretaker cabinet chief secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ghulam Dastagir Akhtar, Inspector General Police, Akbar Khan Hoti, Additional Chief Secretary Attaullah Khan Toro, Secretary Administration Hifz-ur-Rehman, Secretary Home and Tribal Affairs Azam Khan, Secretary Finance Sahibzada Saeed, Secretary Law and Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad Arifeen, Secretary Local government Aurangzeb Khan, Secretary Information, Azmat Hanif Orakzai and Provincial Election Commissioner Sono Khan Baloch attended the meeting. Secretary local government and provincial election commissioner briefed the meeting regarding the preparations for the upcoming general elections whereas, Secretary Home and Inspector General Police briefed the meeting about the Law and Order situation in the province with special reference to the general elections.

In his address to the participants the chief minister said that according to the constitution of the country holding of fair and transparent elections was the duty of election commission however, there is a provision for caretaker government in the constitution to help and assist the election commission hold free, fair and transparent elections in a peaceful environment. The role of caretaker government is that of a bridge in the smooth transfer of power from an elected government to other; he maintained. The chief minister said that though the caretaker government was not an elected one but it has to shoulder the huge responsibility of maintaining and creating peaceful environment for a free, fair and transparent elections. He expressed his resolve to admirably discharge his constitutional duties of conducting the general elections in a peaceful atmosphere in the province; and vowed that all the resources would be utilized for the purpose.

The meeting expressed its satisfaction over the preparation of the concerned departments for the elections and the preparations and planning’s of the law enforcing agencies to maintain law and order during the election process. It proposed certain measure to the law enforcing agencies to be taken for maintaining law and order with reference to the general elections.
