In an attempt to broaden the tax net, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to include lavish hotels, food chains and restaurants from Karachi in its tax list.

FBR has sent notices to more than 200 key restaurants and bakeries in the metropolis.

In the 214 notices sent out to the owners of restaurants and bakeries, the Regional Tax Office (RTOII) of Karachi demanded the details of their sales and income tax returns.

According to the sources familiar with the matter, the tax base unit of RTOII had earmarked hundreds of restaurants and bakers with massive turnovers that were not paying taxes.

This is the first phase, the sources said, The board will make raids, send teams and take stern legal action against the nonpayers in the next step.
