Former KCCA chief deplores non-selection of Karachi playersJuly 2, 2013
Karachi: Prof. Syed Sirajul Islam Bukhari, who has recently been shown the doors as Karachi City Cricket Association KCCA President, deplored the non-selection of merited Karachi cricketers in the national team for upcoming West Indies tour.
“The Karachi team, which has won the Quaid-e-Azam trophy, the blue rib band of the Pakistan Cricket and joint leader of Pakistan One Day Faysal Bank Cricket Tournament this year, but none of its deserving cricketers found place in Pakistan team being announced shortly for the West Indies tour,” Bukhari said.
He said that he was surprised by the fact that none of the top cricketers from Karachi were in the reckoning for selection in Pakistan team for West Indies as they were not asked even to appear in the fitness test.
Bukhari, who had been a cautious critic of PCB as KCCA President, said he pleaded the cases of Akbar Rehman who top scored with 986 runs at an average of 89.64 runs in Quaid e Azam Trophy, Khurram Manzoor who made 516 runs in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and 549 runs in President’s trophy this year and Sarfraz Ahmed who made 139 runs in four matches of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and 424 runs in President’s Cup this year. Sarfraz was selected for the South African tour for the test matches. Sarfaraz exhibited fine wicketkeeping and was the third top scorer with 40 runs in South Africa.
Bukhari also criticized Karachi based Iqbal Qasim, the Chairman of the National Selection Committee and his senior colleague Salim Jaffer.
“They have failed to play their due role in the Selection Committee for not pleading the cases of these merited Karachi players. When the Pakistan team was being selected I sent them messages that Akbar Rehman, Khurram Manzoor and Sarfaraz Ahmed have a good chance of selection but I did not find their names in the list of cricketers called for the fitness test. As usual there was no response from both of them,” Bukhari said.
Bukhari also blasted Subhan Ahmed, the former PCB stenographer but later promoted as Chief Operating Officer COO of PCB.
“It surprises me greatly that Subhan Ahmed, the former PCB stenographer who was later promoted as Chief Operating Officer COO of PCB for pleasing Ijaz Butt, the then Chairman of PCB and later Zaka Ashraf, the suspended Chairman of PCB and he still enjoys the top position in PCB without caring for the merit of the above Karachi cricketers,” Bukhari said.
Bukhari appealed to Najam Seithi, the Interim Chairman PCB to go through records of the three Karachi based cricketers before approving the Pakistan cricket team for the West Indies tour, on his return from England after attending the ICC meeting.
Meanwhile, Bukhari also claims that the PCB constitution is silent on the term of office bearers of KCCA while the registered KCCA constitution says that, “the office bearers and members of the Council shall retire at the General Body meeting held after three years and the retiring office bearers shall however continue to hold office till the elections are held”.
Bukhari has been retired as KCCA President before the elections.
