United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Miguel Angel Moratinos Cuyaube of Spain as high representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), effective 1 January 2019.

Moratinos succeeds Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser of Qatar, to whom the UN chief expressed his gratitude for his vision and leadership in enhancing dialogue with stakeholders and strengthening the work and objectives of the Alliance.

“In these troubled times, the Alliance is a unique and inclusive platform for member states, the private sector, youth, civil society and the media to exchange views and commit to dialogue and new partnerships,” Guterres said on Tuesday in his remarks to Group of Friends of UN Alliance of Civilizations.

Over the past six years, the Alliance has been ably led by Al-Nasser. He has guided the work of the Alliance during a period of unprecedented challenges to peace and security, he added.

In his remarks the UN chief introduced Al-Nasser’s successor, saying that Moratinos brings rich experience as the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, not to mention many other very distinguished services he has given to the international community.
