Health Deptt to support work of humanitarian organizations: Saboor KakarJuly 18, 2013
QUETTA: Project inception meeting of “Expanding access to skilled birth attendance through Community Midwives CMWs” was held here at a local hotel the other day.
The project is implemented by Mercy Corps and financially supported by Research and Advocacy Fund. The project will seek ways to improve gaps in the CMW component of the MNCH program by working with the government partners.
Secretary Health Balochistan Abdul Saboor Kakar thanked all the participants and Mercy Corps for starting the project of “Expanding access to skilled birth attendance through CMWs”. He said that he acknowledges the fact that the figures of MMR, IMR etc are really disappointing and disturbing especially for Balochistan. He added that after the 18th Amendment under the devolved structure, many issues have come out for the provincial health department and a kind of vacuum has been created. In this scenario, to fill this vacuum, the NGOs and WHO need to play their vital role in supporting the provincial health department.
He thanked Mercy Corps and Research and Advocacy Fund RAF for supporting the health department. He underlined the point that international donors are there for supporting and setting standards and to introduce best international practices. He called upon the participants from health department that the real work has to be done by them.
He discussed various weaknesses in the health system of Balochistan and hoped that the support of international donors would continue. He stressed the need of integrating various programs together as compared to working independently and simultaneously on a similar task. He extended his full support to Mercy Corps team in all forms to make this program a success.
