Irrigation dept cancels leaves as water level of barrages rise in SindhAugust 4, 2013
Daharki, Sindh: The Sindh irrigation department declaring emergency has cancelled leaves of its employees as the water level is on the rise at all barrages of province.
As per details, water level of Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri barrages are rising and villagers living in riverside areas have already started shifting to safer places, sensing yet another big flood. There are four protective embankments between Guddu and Sukkur barrages – Qadirpur Loop Bund, Rawanti Bund, Akil-Agani Bund and Thori Bund all of them in danger of breach due to poor repair and maintenance. The floodwater has already entered the Katcha area of Rawanti, inundating villages, mosques and schools.
Irrigation department declaring emergency has set up relief camps along the embankments.
Deputy Commissioner Ghotki Fareed Junejo Sunday along with irrigation department officers visited the embankments of the district and reviewed the flood situation. He told media that Qadirpur Loop Bund and Rawanti Bund are under severe pressure and might break if floodwater level further rose. He said in any emergency situation they would summon the army from nearby Pano Aqil cantonment.
