Irrigation engineers asked to revisit flood control strategyJuly 18, 2013
Hyderabad: Deputy Commissioner Matiari Fayyaz Hussain Abbasi has directed the engineers of Irrigation Department to revisit their flood fighting strategy, specially with reference to current flow of water in the Indus River and to ensure that all the embankments passing from Matiari district are strong enough even to sustain more pressure of water, Engineers sustained in 2010.
This he directed while paying surprise visit of the river embankment from Old Hala to New Saeed Abad today. Taking the serious notice of the reports appeared in the section of press, the Deputy Commissioner Matiari issued warning to the officers to conduct their filed survey, identify loop holes or vulnerable point, if any and report their problem before the time so that same could be resolved earlier.
He said that government has invested huge amount on the strengthening of embankments and has raised the level of embankments above the flood level of 2010 and added that this step must be made fruitful; failing which strict action would be taken against responsible. He said that in addition to river flood, we must be careful about the rain flood in the pacca / urban areas. He said that better arrangements to meet any eventuality of River or rain flood would not only to reduce the Government’s Relief & Rescue and rehabilitation bill but also to save costly infrastructure and protect the lives and properties of the people. The Deputy Commissioner Matiari said that all stakeholder organizations have been sensitized much before the flood season and they must have to yield the result in positive sense.
Deputy Commissioner asked the engineers of Irrigation Department to keep the Abkalani material available at vulnerable points, enforce the effective watch system by establishing monitoring HUT at each K. meter of embankments, plug all cuts in the embankment made by villagers of inside river for their way and also made the inspection paths motorable for heavy machinery to combat the situation with success. He also directed them to submit their flood fighting SOP to him and to implement it in letter & spirit.
