Isolation, vascular surgery wards in CHK closedFebruary 11, 2014
Karachi: The Isolation and vascular surgery wards of Civil Hospital (CHK) have been closed by the administration due to the non-availability qualified doctors, causing immense problems for patients.
Hospital sources told PPI that the in-charge of Isolation Ward CHK left job a few years ago and the administration due to the non-availability of a specialist doctor of infectious diseases, silently closed down the ward.
They said that the isolation ward is a separate ward used to isolate the patients suffering from infectious diseases, adding individual patients with severe infection are usually admitted in the isolation ward.
The sources revealed said similarly the head of the vascular surgery ward Prof Dr Sohail went on long leave about two years ago and the CHK administration failed to arrange another specialist doctor for this surgery ward. In the case also the administration closed down this important ward as the Dow University Health Sciences (DUHS) failed to provide an alternate professor to run it.
They said around 50 to 70 patients used to bring up in vascular surgery ward with problems in veins on daily basis for treatment, but now this 50-beds ward remains closed. All patients with vascular surgery requirements are now referred to private hospitals, where the treatment of vascular surgical problems is very costly and each surgery requires half to one million rupees.
Medical Superintendent (MS) of CHK Prof Muhammad Saeed Qureshi, when contacted, said DUHS administration could not provide the specialist doctors of vascular surgery and infectious diseases to run these two very important wards. He said the CHK administration is ready to reopen both wards after the provision of specialist doctors for these vacant posts.
However, Vice-Chancellor DUHS Prof Dr Masood Hameed Khan said the head of vascular surgery had applied for leave, but he never joined his duty after completion of his leave period. He said strict disciplinary action would be taken against him. He said the posting of specialist doctors in the Isolation Ward is the responsibility of CHK administration, itself.
He said there is a court order straining him for postings and transfers in the university as VC of DUHS; therefore, advertisement for vacant post could not be announced to fulfil the requirements so far. He said these two wards can also be through general surgeons if the CHK administration shows a real interest in this regard.
President Pakistan Paramedical Staff Association (PPSA) Karachi Division Muhammad Nazeer Abbasi said PPSA has sent an application for reopening these two wards to Secretary Health Sindh, VC DUHS and MS CHK
He urged the hospital administration to appoint the heads of these two wards and reopen them as soon as possible in the public interest. He said PPSA would approach the court for getting these two wards reopened if the authorities do not take notice of the sufferings of patients due to the closure of the wards.
