Karachi: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation KMC Administrator Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi has said that measures were being taken to light up the street lights on all major roads and locations in city with solar energy.

He said this during a meeting with officials of electrical and mechanical departments.

Administrator KMC said that the use of solar energy will be increased gradually and besides the roads, parks and playgrounds will also be provided with solar powered lights.

He said this experiment had gained huge success in the whole world and many big cities of the world were now using solar energy to light up main roads and other locations, especially the local bodies were benefiting from this experiment.

He said this city has the honour to be called the city of lights therefore it was our responsibility to maintain its lights and gracefulness along with development works.

He said solar powered lights as an experiment will be installed this month whereas the major corridors, Bagh Ibne Qasim, Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Park and other parks will also have it on a gradual basis.

Administrator asked the officials to conduct a technical audit of the usage of electricity in Civic Centre in the first phase so that the exact consumption of electricity could be ascertained and any wastage could be stopped.

He also directed KMC officers to ensure energy conservation by allowing only necessary usage of electricity.

He said meetings to review the pace of work on solar energy usage in KMC parks, play grounds and buildings will be held each month because this was an important and serious problem of the city. Street lights help maintain traffic flow and reduce street crimes as well.

He directed officers to review this with KESC authorities in command & control room to ensure street lights turned off in day times and take measures to save energy.
