KP government announces Accountability Commission

Peshawar: To curb the menace of corruption and misuse of authority Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s government has announced formation of independent Accountability Commission in the province.

Commission will be fully autonomous and will have financial and operational independence where government will exercise no power and would be unable to interfere in the functions of accountability commission.

Provincial Minister for information Shah Farman while briefing media about the salient features of the Accountability Commission said that seven members of the Search and Scrutiny Committee SSC will be selected by Legislative Committee of the provincial assembly and it will consists of five members each from treasury and opposition benches.

“The legislative committee will appoint Search and Scrutiny Committee only for once and after that the legislative Committee will have no role. Search and Scrutiny Committee will appoint five Accountability Commissioners,” he said.

Provincial Minister said that Search and Scrutiny Committee members will be men of integrity and they will have no political affiliation. They will be retired judges, retired civil servants of grade 22, and social workers with good track record, business men, academia, senior journalists and credible overseas Pakistanis.

He said that members of the Search and Scrutiny Committee will declare their assets and they will have no affiliation with any political party. Shafarman said that the nomination of Search and Scrutiny Committee will be for four years and this tenure will not be extendable.

He said that appointment of Accountability Commissioners will be fully on merit and government will have no job in their appointment will be made by Search and Scrutiny Committee. The Accountability Commissioners will also declare their assets, he informed.

Replying to various questions he said that Ehtesab Commission Accountability Commission will not make any plea bargain adding that to keep it out of executive control the commission will have financial and administrative independence and could not be used for political victimization.

About the draft law, he said that the draft has not been finalized and government will welcome any positive suggestions from any one.
