KPK and FATA youth practice peace-building skills at Murree coaching retreatJune 6, 2013
Murree: Search For Common Ground Pakistan, in collaboration with PAIMAN Alumni Trust, conducted a two-day Coaching Retreat for 22 youth leaders from 22 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhawa and FATA, during which they practiced their newly acquired peace-building skills.
The “Coaching Retreat for Youth on Mediation and Dialogue” was conducted under the “Promoting Peace in KPK and FATA – Connecting Youth and Policymakers through Mediation and Dialogue’’ project funded by the European Union and implemented by SFCG Pakistan in partnership with PAIMAN Alumini Trust. Participating youth had earlier been provided advanced training on dialogue, mediation and networking with policymakers to identify and resolve local issues of conflict through community action plans. The coaching retreat further increased their capacity and confidence to manage challenges while organizing mediation and dialogue activities in their own communities.
During the Coaching Retreat, the advanced youth leaders were given a unique opportunity to discuss and seek guidance on how to face challenges while implementing their action plans, and how to undertake sustainable peace initiatives in their communities. In addition to one-on-one coaching sessions provided during the retreat, the youth also participated in role-playing activities in order to gain practical experience for implementing their initiatives. They also attended a special capacity-building session on project development and management, proposal writing and financial management.
“Coaching is a process of building trust and polishing the leadership potential of young leaders,” said Executive Director Search For Common Ground Pakistan, Ammara Durrani while addressing the participants during a brainstorming session. “Through this process, young peace leaders are able to review and refresh their existing skills and the knowledge, which helps them to be more effective in engaging their communities on creative problem-solving.”
The project “Promoting Peace in KPK and FATA – Connecting Youth and Policymakers through Mediation and Dialogue’’ aims at building the capacity of local youth leaders and policymakers in mediation and dialogue, and engage youth leaders with policymakers to bring them in the mainstream of decision-making process for finding effective solutions to conflicts at the community level.
