Karachi: Karachi University Teachers Society KUTS here Wednesday strongly criticized the newly passed bill to amend the Sindh varsities laws. The Sindh Universities Laws Amendment Bill 2013 was presented in Sindh assembly through supplementary agenda by Sindh law minister Dr Sikandar Mandhro on Monday and passed amid walkout of Muttahida Qaumi Movement MQM.

An emergency meeting of the executive council of KUTS was held at Karachi University Wednesday which expressed serious concerns on the bill and termed it a grave blow on the independence of universities in Sindh. They said the statutory bodies of universities would become virtually dysfunctional after the passage of this bill and all the academic and administrative matters of varsities would be openly interfered by ruling political parties. It was said that the academic councils of the varsities are proper bodies to chalk out policies for varsities and no other element should be allowed to interfere in this regard.

It was decided to summon an emergency general body meeting of KUTS on Friday, August 23 at the Arts Auditorium of Karachi University to chalk out further action plan.
