LEW affectees’ cases: SHC directs not demolishing houses of Liaquatabad residents till compensation payment

Karachi: The Sindh High Court SHC on Wednesday directed the provincial authorities not to demolish the houses of residents of Liaquatabad whose land is e acquired for Lyari Expressway project unless compensation is paid to them.

A division bench headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar gave this direction while disposing of as many as four constitutional petitions of the affectees. The petitions were filed by the residents of Liaquatabad, Angara Goth, who prayed to the court for compensation before demolition of their houses.

The petitioners, 50 residents of Liaquatabad represented by Advocate Shaukat Ali Shaikh, stated that respondents were trying to demolish their houses though they had registered lease deeds. They stated that the respondents did not pay the compensation amount to them as per directions of the SHC and as per market value of their property.

The petitioners prayed to the court to direct the respondents to pay an adequate compensation as per market value or consider Section 23 of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894.

Earlier, the court had restrained the Lyari Expressway project authorities and other respondents to not to demolish the houses of the petitioners without paying compensation.
