Tripoli Libyan Interior Minister Abdel Salam Ashour called on Mediterranean and neighboring countries to stand by his country in the face of illegal immigration.

Ashour made the appeal during his meeting with Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Sigrid Kaag in Tripoli on Wednesday. He reviewed the challenges and obstacles experienced by the migrants’ shelter centers in Libya, as well as the burden shouldered by the country as a result of the influx of large numbers of migrants from the south to Europe through Libyan territories in risky boat journeys.

Also during the meeting, Ashour renewed the Libyan government’s call for the neighboring countries to protect their borders from the flows of these huge numbers of migrants that have become a source of threat to the North African country.
