Malaysia goes to polls in general election today

Kuala Lumpur (UNA-OIC) � Voters in Malaysia headed Wednesday morning to the polling stations in the country’s 14th general election.

Contesting in this election are incumbent Prime Minister Najib Razak, former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and leader of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) Abdul Hadi Awang.

A total of 14.9 million eligible electors started early in the morning casting their ballots at 8,253 polling stations nationwide. They will also vote to elect representatives to 222 parliamentary and 505 state assembly seats.

The Malaysia Election Commission (MEC) said, in a statement, that the results of the elections would be announced late Wednesday evening.
