Monsoon floods/rain threats: Authorities directed to strength Indus River banks, remove encroachmentsJune 11, 2013
HYDERABAD: Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad Jamal Mustafa Syed Tuesday took round of flood protective bunds of Indus River passing from District Hyderabad to ascertain strength with reference to cope with forthcoming flood challenges with success. The Deputy Commissioner Hyderabad Mohammad Nawaz Sohu, Director SIDA Left Bank Habibur Rehman, Executive Engineer Phuleli Division Mujeebur Rehman Abbasi and other officers from Irrigation and Revenue Departments accompanied the Commissioner during the visit.
The Divisional Commissioner directed the officers of SIDA to identify and ascertain the vulnerable points bank along with protective bunds of Indus River and take precautionary foolproof preventive measures in advance. He directed the officers to be more vigilant and conscious especially at Qasimabad, Guddu and Latifabad Bunds, because of having been no second defence line to these areas. He directed the officers to put their all resources in the field with a view to meet any eventuality of breach, erosion or flood threat to people.
In order to put each area of the Bank under close watch, monitoring huts Landhies must be established with availability of necessary Abkalani material after every one or two furlongs. He said though the rehabilitation work of the Banks is almost completed but same be monitored constantly and bottlenecks if any should be resolved in advance.
The Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad also took notice of encroachments on the Banks and directed the officers concerned to remove all such encroachments, private bunds if any that creating obstacles in the flow of water or movement of the machinery of Irrigation Department with immediate effect.
He said that he has called a separate meeting on June 12, 2013 today to prepare flood fighting strategy and directed the officers to bring record of their preparation, recommendations for the purpose. He also asked the officers concerned to identify the villages, inhabitants inside the River Indus and also to prepare plan of their shifting in case of any emergency. He asked the officers to bring their proposals, recommendations complete in all respect so that an integrated foolproof flood fighting plan be conceived.
Earlier during visit of Bunds, the Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad Jamal Mustafa Syed in a meeting directed the MD WASA to keep all pumping houses, machinery of sewerage system functional for efficient disposal of rainy water from the city areas. He assured the management that their financial matters would be got resolved from competent authority.
He also recommended to the HESCO authority to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the WASA installation and assured that their liabilities against the WASA would be got cleared.
The Divisional Commissioner directed the MD WASA to prepare contingency plan and keep the staff alert to meet the monsoon challenges in urban areas with success and also submit his difficulties if any in advance so that same could be resolved.
