Monsoon rains threat: Cleanliness of all water drainage routes ordered

KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation KMC Administrator Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi has directed Municipal Services Department to ensure cleanliness of all routes of water drainage before upcoming monsoon rains and make such arrangements which could make monsoon season pleasant for citizens.

He said this while issuing directives to municipal services and other concerned departments for preparing strategy pertaining to monsoon rains. He said that along with cleanliness of all big and small drains review, a complete availability of machinery, equipment and labour should be ensured to deal with the situation during rains in every district and a comprehensive report in this regard be prepared so that arrangements of facilities could be made possible where shortage of resources noticed.

He said that considering expected monsoon rains, municipal commissioners of all districts, chief engineers and all relevant staff should be in contact for keeping resources in standby condition for rain emergency.

He directed district municipal corporations to concentrate on cleanliness of drains, repairing of their walls and drainage works so that citizens during rains would not have to face inconvenience. “District municipal commissioners should point out those locations in their areas where rain water accumulates in the past so that special attention should be paid to those locations and obstacles in the way of water drainage works could be removed.”

He said that during recent rains poor performance of water drainage in different areas of cantonment boards was seen which was due to lack of labour and machinery in concerned departments. In this connection, a combined strategy with cantonment board administration for better arrangements should be prepared in cantonment areas since we all own this city and have to keep it clean ourselves.”

He directed municipal services department to enhance speed of cleanliness works of 18 big drains and utilize all available resources whereas cleanliness of small drains in jurisdiction of five DMCs was the responsibility of district administration, therefore, all district municipal corporations should start cleanliness works on emergency basis so that a complete cleanliness of small drains should be carried out before monsoon rains.

Karachi administrator said that spray campaign in various areas of the city was underway the whole year, however, the campaign should be faster for elimination of malaria and dengue during monsoon season and concentrate on such areas where poor condition of cleanliness was observed in past.

He said that better policy for utilization of available resources should be implemented and problems being faced by citizens should be resolved with the collaboration of concerned departments.
