NICVD’s 3day golden jubilee celebrations staring from August 23 Thought provoking sessions to be held to raise healthcare awareness

KARACHI: The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases NICVD, established in 1963, is celebrating its Golden Jubilee on completion of 50 years of service to the people of Pakistan.

The Institute, being the first tertiary care center of subcontinent, has been serving the entire nation by providing state of the art care to the poor and needy patients of country besides benefitting thousands of patients from neighbouring countries like Iran and Afghanistan.

Being the center of training and post graduate education, the Institute has trained a bulk of manpower as specialists and paramedics in the field of cardiology and cardiac surgery.

The three-day Golden Jubilee celebrations will start on August 23 by holding public awareness program on sudden cardiac death from 09.00 am to 12.00 noon at Conference Hall of NICVD. Later in the evening, the inaugural ceremony will be held at a local hotel at 06.00 pm. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah will be the chief guest.

The second day activities will start on August 24 by live transmission from Cath Lab NICVD to PC Ball Room from 09.00 am to 11.00 am. Panel of experts consisting Professor Nadeem Qamar, Col Mujeeb, Brig Afsar Raza, Dr Muhammad Amin Arfi and Dr Haseena Changani will be present.

Dr Anis Memon will be the moderator. Later, a session on Cardiology in Pakistan – Role of NICVD will be held. Prof SM. Rab and Prof Ghaffar Billo will co-chair the session. During this session, Dr Shakeel Qureshi will give presentation on establishment of advance intervention program of Paediatric Cardiology at NICVD. Prof Rehman will speak on history of cardiac surgery in Pakistan, Prof KU Aziz on Evolution of Paeds Cardiology in Pakistan and Prof AM Faruqui on Cardiology in Pakistan.

The afternoon session will begin with live transmission from Cath Lab NICVD to PC Ball Room. A panel of experts consisting Prof Khalida Soomro, Prof Mansoor Ahmed, Dr Masroor Hussain Sharfi and Dr Mehnaz Atiq will be present. Prof M Ishaq, Prof Feroz Memon, Prof Aziz Jamal Naqvi and Dr Bashir Hanif will co-chair the session.

Later, Dr Saulat Fatimi will speak on role of assisting devises in heart failure, Prof Arif ur Rehman Khan on surgery for Aortic and Arch NICVD experience, Dr. Khusro Niazi on evaluation of peripheral arterial diseases, Dr. Zahid Amin on role of Percutaneous Intervention in Paediatric Cardiology and Dr. Wolf will speak on role of Dual Anti Platelet therapy in Complex PCI, Bifurcations and Diabetics. The second day will end with gala dinner.

The third and last day on August 25 will begin with a session on non-communicable diseases, to be co-chaired by Dr Masood Hameed, Dr. Samad Shera and Prof. Waqar Kazmi. During this session, Prof. Kalimuddin Aziz will speak on Metroville Health Study; Dr. Saulat Siddiqui on ‘Hypertension – a silent killer’; Dr. Naila Zahid on screening & early diagnosis of common cancer; Dr. Ajmal Kazmi on ‘prevalence of depressive disorders in patients with cardiovascular diseases; Prof. Abdul Basit on ‘current state of diabetic care in Pakistan’; Dr. Bashir Hanif on ‘prevalence and prevention of coronary artery diseases in developing countries and Dr. Jawed A. Khan will speak on ‘tobacco control – a key to prevent non-communicable diseases in Pakistan.’

The last session will discuss the ethical issues in medical practice. During this session, co-chaired by Prof Azhar MA Faruqui and Prof Adeeb Rizvi, two papers on ‘Doctor-Industry Relationship’ and ‘Ethical issues and perception related to organ transplant’ will be presented by Prof Idrees Edhi and Prof. Anwer Naqvi respectively.

Prof Khan Shah Zaman, Executive Director, NICVD, will deliver concluding address.
