Nine people killed, 49 injured in blast at ANP rally

Peshawar: At least 9 people including four policemen were killed and 49 injured in a suicide blast near Awami National Party ANP meeting in Yakatoot area of Peshawar on Tuesday, said officials.

The bomb blast occurred soon after the arrival of senior ANP leader Ghulam Ahmed Bilour and Haroon Bashir Bilour. The blast occurred near the vehicle of Haroon Bilour however at the time of the blast he was in the vehicle.

City Police chief Liaqat said police had guarded the Bilour Family when they arrived at the public meeting site. He said a lot of people were present at the site for the ANP leader’s reception. He said that the suicider was walking among the crowd and blew himself near the vehicle.

He said that driver of Bilour’s vehicle along with four police men including SHO Kotwali Abid Khan, an ASI and two constables were killed and four other dead are civilians. He said that walk through gate was installed at the venue where Bilours had planned to address the public meeting.

CCPO said that there are security threats but the police are trying on a daily basis to avert them by conducting raids, picking up people and gathering information.

Bomb Disposal Unit said that Up to six kilogram’s of explosives along with splinters and ball bearings were used in the blast.

The injured were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar where emergency has been declared. Bilour family also reached hospital to inquire about the health of injured party workers.
