Over 6000 schools still non-functional in Sindh

Karachi: Despite tall claims of every successive government of reopening a large number of closed or non-functional schools, as many as 6458 schools are still non-functional in 23 districts of Sindh including Karachi for non-availability of teaching staff, low enrolment, odd location, having no building and many other reasons.

The official documents show that 566 schools in Badin district, 443 in Dadu, 126 in Ghotki, 15 in Hyderabad, 278 in Jacobabad, 201 in Jamshoro, 446 in Kambar, 90 in Karachi, 312 in Kashmore, 426 in Khairpur, 66 in Larkana, 50 in Matiari, 263 in Mirpur Khas, 84 in Naushehro Feroze, 490 in Nawabshah, 123 in Sanghar, 263 in Shikarpur, 89 in Sukkur, 105 in Tando Allahyar, 262 in Tando Muhammad Khan, 1086 in Tharparkar, 294 in Thatta and 371 schools in Umerkot are closed due to reasons stated above.

According to official data the schools closed due to non-availability of teaching staff are 334 in Badin district, 349 in Dadu, 71 in Ghotki, 5 in Hyderabad, 273 in Jacobabad, 166 in Jamshoro, 357 in Kambar, 24 in Karachi, 265 in Kashmore, 386 in Khairpur, 49 in Larkana, 48 in Matiari, 233 in Mirpur Khas, 44 in Naushehro Feroze, 406 in Nawabshah, 83 in Sanghar, 171 in Shikarpur, 78 in Sukkur, 89 in Tando Allahyar, 201 in Tando Muhammad Khan, 1001 in Tharparkar, 217 in Thatta and 336 in Umerkot.

The low enrolment is the cause of closure of 22 schools in Badin district, 12 in Dadu, 25 in Ghotki, 3 in Jamshoro, 14 in Kambar, 1 in Khairpur, 30 Mirpur Khas, 3 in Naushehro Feroze, 2 each in Nawabshah, Sanghar and Sukkur, 1 in Shikarpur, 8 in Tando Muhammad Khan, 24 in Tharparkar and 6 in Umerkot.

In certain districts some schools are closed for having other schools in the vicinity. They are 7 in Badin, 8 in Dadu, 5 in Ghotki, 3 in Hyderabad, 13 in Kambar, 1 each in Naushehro Feroze, Nawabshah, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan and Tharparkar, 2 in Sanghar and 6 in Thatta.

Similarly, odd location has also contributed to closure of 3 schools in Badin district, 3 in Ghotki, 7 in Kambar, 1 each in Karachi and Sanghar and 2 in Thatta.

The number of shelter-less schools is 43 in Badin, 9 each in Dadu, Ghotki, Tharparkar and Thatta, 3 in Hyderabad, 5 in Jacobabad, 19 in Jamshoro, 3 in Kambar, 6 in Karachi, 3 in Larkana, 2 in Matiari, 5 in Mirpur Khas, 22 in Naushehro Feroze, 18 in Nawabshah, 8 in Sanghar, 4 in Sukkur, 2 in Tando Allahyar and 1 in Umerkot.

The previous PPP government had also claimed reopening schools and announced appointing thousands of teachers but it proved just hollow claims.
