Cairo (UNA-OIC) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will participate in the World Conference in Support of Jerusalem to be organized by Al-Azhar, in collaboration with the Council of Muslim Elders on January 17-18 at the Al-Azhar International Conference Center in Cairo.

Al-Azhar said, in a statement, on Wednesday that the invitation to hold the conference comes within the series of decisions taken by Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb to respond to the decision of US President Donald Trump to transfer the American embassy to the occupied Jerusalem and recognition of the city as the capital of the occupying Zionist entity. These decisions also included the refusal of Al-Azhar Grand Imam to meet the vice president of the United States on December 20.

On December 6, Trump made a statement recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and that his administration would relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The decision sparked huge outrage and protests around the world.

For its part, Al-Azhar strongly condemned the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, describing it as an illegitimate and reckless step and an unacceptable attempt to falsify history.
