PHC orders re-polling of women in NA5 & NA27

Peshawar: Peshawar High Court PHC on Tuesday has ordered re-polling on stations in NA5 Nowshera and NA27 Lakki Marwat where women were barred from voting or their percentage was low.

Hearing the sue motto notice double bench of Peshawar High Court comprising chief justice dost Mohammad Khan and Justice Malik Manzoor Hussain ordered Election Commission to form an inquiry team which would evaluate the voting rate of women in NA5 and NA27. Re-polling will be held on the findings of the inquiry team.

During proceedings of the case the Chief Justice of PHC in his remarks said that women constitutes 52% of the population and minority could not be given the right to decide the fate of majority.

He called on the government to formulate a law to stop practice of barring the women from exercising their right to vote. Chief Justice said it was beyond understanding that in the country where a woman was elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan women are being barred from vote.

Sono Khan Baloch, the provincial election commission submitted the report which stated that a Jirga had barred women from casting their votes. He assured the court that its orders will be implemented in letter and spirit.

It is to be worth mentioning during by elections in these constituencies, women were barred from voting or their percentage was low. This had prompted the PHC Chief Justice to take notice and halt the results on the two constituencies.
