PIAF urges Govt. to concentrate on Kalabagh Dam to generate electricityMarch 3, 2014
LAHORE: Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF), while appreciating the government for making all out efforts to generate electricity, has urged the government to concentrate on Kalabagh Dam that has the capacity to generate 3600 MW of electricity at the rate of Rs 6 per unit.
In a statement issued here, the PIAF Chairman said that the power generation through Nandipur Power Project in May 2014 would definitely help curtail load shedding but would no way be eliminating it therefore it would be wiser on the part of the government if it focuses on Kalabagh Dam and make another attempt to evince consensus on this mega project of national importance.
Malik Tahir Javaid said that the electricity from India would cost of Rs 16 per unit that would jack up the cost of doing business in Pakistan while all other projects including Thar Coal Project are time taking. He said that it was very unfortunate that the previous regime had never bothered to increase power generation by a single MW and put the whole economy on stake.
He said that just because of power shortage a large number of industrial units had shifted their operations to the other countries leaving a large number of industrial workers jobless. He said that unbelievable pace of work on Nandipur Power Project has not only given a ray of hope to the local businessmen but has also given a very good signal to the foreign investors who were reluctant to put their money into the ventures in Pakistan.
Malik Tahir Javed stressed the need to build consensus on Kalabagh Dam that could easily fulfil day-to-day energy and water needs of the country. He said that Kalabagh Dam was a mega project as it could easily curtail the menace of water shortage and could generate more than 3600 MW cheap electricity. And most importantly it could save the people of particularly Sindh and Baluchistan from flood destruction.
He said that the people, who are against Kalabagh Dam, always avoid saying a word against Indian water aggression, which shows that how much they are loyal with the country. He said that keeping in view the devastation of recent-past floods, government should not waste time and start construction of KBD immediately otherwise the days are not far when the country would have best irrigation system in the world but not water.
