PM: PM directs to speed up Neelum-Jhelum Project

MUZAFFARABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday directed the concerned authorities to expedite construction work on Rs274.882 billion Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project and make it functional till 201415 to overcome the power shortage issue in the country. He stated this while inspecting various parts of the Neelum-Jhelum Hydro Power Project.

The Prime Minister was informed about salient features of the project. He was told that the project is being constructed with the financial and technical assistance of China and the work on the project is expected to be completed by 2016. After completion‚ it will add about 970 megawatt electricity to the national grid.

Later‚ talking to media persons the Prime Minister said he would present power policy within 20 days in an address to nation. He said that despite financial constraints‚ necessary resources would be made available for power projects.

He said that the directions have been given for completion of Neelum-Jhelum Hydro Power project one year ahead of the deadline of 2016. He said people are facing great difficulties due to severe energy crisis and his government would minimize their difficulties.
