Police ordered to make Afaq’s poll drive convenient

Karachi: Sindh High Court SHC on Tuesday directed police officials to extend all necessary help to make the election campaign of Chairman Mohajir Qaumi Movement Afaq Ahmed convenient.

The petitioner, Afaq Ahmed, who is contesting the election from two National Assembly constituencies NA251 and NA255, Karachi, submitted that while disposing of his petition the SHC had directed the Sindh Police and Rangers not to prohibit him Afaq from conducting election campaign.

Though, he said, on May 1 he and his party workers were restrained by Landhi police from entering Landhi near Dawood Chowrangi and he was not allowed to enter Landhi area for conducting his election campaign.

Petitioner submitted that Election Commission of Pakistan was duty bound to conduct polls fairly and freely. He prayed to the court to take action against alleged contemnors including SP, DSP and SHO Landhi for disobeying the court order, and direct police and Rangers to act in accordance with law and provide a complete access to Afaq to conduct election campaign in his constituencies.

During the proceedings, Muhammad Ahmed DSP Landhi submitted that there is no restriction on movement of the petitioner and they would facilitate election campaign of the petitioner.

The court said that it is expected that police functionaries shall extend all necessary help to make election campaign of petitioner convenient.

However, the court disposed of the contempt application on assurance of police officials.
