Islamabad: Slowly but surely all political parties started electioneering in Federal Capital as political parties’ workers were busy in installing banners of candidates on main highways of Federal Capital.

Number of candidates submitted nomination papers to contest for NA48 and NA49 of Islamabad constituencies. In Capital constituency NA 49 PMLN’s Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, PPP nominee Mustafa Nawaz Khokar and JUI ticket holder Zubair Farooq Khan have started their campaigns.

NA49 is one of the two constituencies of the federal capital which mostly covers rural areas of Islamabad. In 2008 elections, a very close contest was witnessed between PMLN and PPP. Dr Fazal had won the seat by defeating PPP stalwart Nayyar Hussain Shah Bokhari. He bagged 45,482 votes against Bokhari’s 44,726 votes.

While PMLQ candidate Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar also got over 35,000 votes. He later joined PPP and served as advisor to prime minister on human rights.

Political pundits, keeping the current scenario in view, believe Nawaz is in a better position to win this seat. However, it is difficult to say anything for sure at the moment.

43 nomination papers have been filed with the Election Commission of Pakistan ECP for NA48 and NA49, the two constituencies of Islamabad. Apart from PPPP and PMLN, Jamaat-e-Islami JI, Tehreek-e-Insaaf PTI and All Pakistan Muslim
League APML are also in the race for these two seats.

PMLN secured the two seats back in 2008. At the last elections, PMLN’s Anjum Aqeel Khan bagged over 60,000 votes for NA48. The PPPP’s candidate, Dr Israr Shah had to settle for less than 30,000 votes. Over ten candidates including Anjum Aqeel Khan, Senator Zafar Ali Shah, Iftikhar Bursa and Adnan Kiani are hoping to secure PMLN’s ticket for NA48.

Former MNA, Anjum Aqeel Khan’s escape from police custody in land scam case involving National Police Foundation is proving to be major obstacle for him regaining the ticket.

The JI has fielded Mian Aslam for this constituency, who won the seat in 2002. However his victory was the result of PMLN’s covert support to him during the election. In NA49, the PPPP has awarded the ticket to Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, son of Haji Nawaz Khokhar who has considerable clout in the local politics of the area. PTI is yet to announce its candidate for this constituency.
