Madrid Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas urged Spain on Monday to recognize Palestine, saying such a move would enhance peace efforts with Israel.

Speaking at a dinner banquet with his host, King Felipe VI of Spain, Abbas expressed his pride in the position of the Spanish Parliament, which recommended that the government of Spain recognize the State of Palestine, and hoped that this would take place soon, as it is important in supporting the chances of achieving peace in the region.

We are proud of the position of the Spanish parliament which recommended to its government to recognize the state of Palestine, which is something we hope will happen soon because of its importance to peace efforts in our region and so that Palestine and Israel can live side-by-side in security, stability and good neighborly relations,” he said.

Abbas also paid tribute to the king as well as the government and people of Spain for supporting the just cause of the Palestinian people, both in international bodies and forums, and in helping to build national institutions in various fields.

“We will continue our work to unify our land and our people, and achieve reconciliation with the support of the brotherly Egypt, to reach one authority, one law and one legitimate weapon, which will alleviate the suffering of our people in the Gaza Strip,” he asserted.
