Rain emergency enforced in megalopolis

KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation KMC Administrator Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi on Monday imposed rain emergency in the metropolis, cancelled leaves of relevant KMC staff and directed them to be present on their duties until next directive.

He also directed Senior Director Municipal Services Dr Shaukat Zaman to start draining rainwater on the locations where it accumulates and also monitor the situation of storm water drains and low lying areas of the city.

The administrator along with Metropolitan Commissioner Matanat Ali Khan, Dr Shaukat Zaman, Director Machinery Pool Noman Arshad and other officers visited various areas of the city, which include Airport, Natha Khan Bridge, Falaknaz, Malir 15, Sharae Faisal, FTC Bridge, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad underpasses, KDA Chowrangi, Old City area and different areas of cantonment board.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that all resources were being utilised for draining out rainwater, while heavy machinery, pumps and labour were also being used. Zaidi directed municipal commissioners of all district municipal corporations to utilise all resources for drainage of rainwater in their areas so that citizens do not face any difficulty in traffic flow.

Following the directive of the administrator, cantonment board was provided with heavy machinery and pumps which were used for drainage of rainwater. The administrator also directed municipal services department to be present in their offices all the time and perform concerned works.

He instructed Municipal Services, Fire Brigade, Parks and other departments that in case of more rains, all officers and staff should be present on their duties so that citizens do not face any difficulty. The Metropolitan Commissioner also directed Sr Director Municipal Services Dr Shaukat Zaman to expedite spray campaign in the city.
