Karachi: Like previous years the main roads and streets of commercial areas of Karachi are teemed with pushcarts and roadside stalls creating severe problems for motorists and commuters.

Traffic police and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) hold a lot of meetings and issue dozens of statements in the month of Ramzan to remove roadside encroachments to facilitate citizens; however, the reality is just opposite as the quantum of illegal encroachments doubles and triples in this month under the very nose of these departments. Insiders said several million rupees change hands as gratification and these sums are too tempting for corrupt bureaucracy.

Last month, illegal encroachments were removed from Empress Market to Regal Chowk in Saddar area and now they have not only resurfaced but their number is almost doubles. Same is the position in other market areas like Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg, Malir, Landhi, Korangi, Lyari, Old City, Burns Road, Jamia Cloth Market, Kharadar and other areas.

The sources said under the gratification deals the encroachers are assured that no action would be taken against them during the Eid shopping season that continues till the Eid moon light.

Moreover, in every market area people are charging huge fees for parking of motorcycles and cars and no one is there to check if they are authentic parking contractors and moonlighters
backed by organized mafias ruling this city.
