SC to hear Gilani’s review petition on March 13March 8, 2013
ISLAMABAD: A three member Supreme Court bench will hear on March 13 a review petition of former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani against his disqualification as parliamentarian for committing contempt of court.
The bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, comprises Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sh. Azmat Saeed. Earlier, Gilani’s review plea had been fixed for March 06, however due to engagements of chief justice in Karachi, the case was delisted.
Gilani had also filed his review petition on his own on Feb 2, 223 days after the June 19, 2012, verdict against him, instead of Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan who had pleaded his case earlier. Gilani has requested the court to grant him permission to argue his case in person instead of through his counsel.
He said his stand before the bench for not writing a letter to Swiss authorities for reopening a graft case involving President Asif Zardari was an official act as a prime minister, after a decision by the then cabinet, and there was nothing personal which should have resulted in his disqualification.
“This official act has now been set aside and reviewed by incumbent Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf by writing the letter to the Swiss authorities and endorsed by the judiciary.” the review petition said, adding that justice required that the petitioner’s conviction be set aside and the disqualification be withdrawn.
