SHC issues notices on petition against prison authorities

KARACHI: Sindh High Court SHC on Tuesday issued notices to home secretary, provincial police chief, and superintendent central prison Karachi, directing them to file comments in a petition that sought action against prison authorities for torturing an accused, political worker of Shirazi family of Thatta, and keeping him in solitary confinement.

A division bench of SHC, headed by Justice Ghulam Sarwar Korai, also issued notice to advocate general of Sindh and adjourned the hearing of the case to Sept 25.

The petitioner, Siraj Ahmed, submitted that his brother Muhammad Hanif, who is political worker of Shirazi family, has been implicated in the two false cases lodged at Baghdadi police station. He told the judges that since his brother was arrested he is kept in the solitary confinement and jail staff was torturing him to force him give a statement against Shirazi family and announce his dissociation with the their party.

The petitioner said that his brother was being victimized due to his political affiliation. Hence, he prayed to the court to restrain jail authorities from torturing his brother and order for his removal from solitary confinement.
