KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday directed chief secretary, secretary local government and Sindh Board of Revenue (SBR) to work out modality and mechanism for setting up intercity bus terminal.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Mushir Alam was seized with the hearing of a petition filed by eight operators of intercity buses against a notice by the Cantonment Board Karachi (CBK) for the removal of a bus stand in Saddar.

The court observed that issue of shifting intercity bus terminal is under consideration since 2004 and various directions have been issued but it seemed that there was no will on the part of either government of Sindh or Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to resolve the lingering issue.

The bench noted that even land reserved for intercity bus terminal has been encroached and administration was favouring encroachers and violators of law but not resolving public issues.

The bench directed chief secretary, secretary local government and secretary SBR to sit together and finally decide once for all the modality and mechanism for handing over possession of the land and funds to KMC for setting up terminal as delay in project is causing colossal loss to public and Sindh government.

It ordered chief secretary to take notice of encroachments on 200 acres of land in Gadap Town which was earlier reserved for the terminal of intercity bus stand.
