SHC repeats notice on petition seeking removal of encroachments’

Karachi: Sindh High Court SHC on Wednesday repeated a notice to Karachi Municipal Corporation KMC and other respondents to file comments on a petition seeking removal of encroachments from rainwater drains.

A division bench headed by Justice Ghulam Sarwar Korai also directed the provincial law officer to file comments, and adjourned the hearing of the case by August 16.

The petitioner, Rana Faizul Hassan, submitted that big and small rainwater drains, which are the major source of the draining out rainwater, have been encroached which cause inconvenience to public as rainwater accumulates. He pointed out that the rainwater drains passing across highway which according to petitioner have been encroached by 90 percent.

The petitioner stated that all rainwater drains, including Lyari Nadi, Malir Nadi, Korangi Nadi have been encroached which cause hurdle in draining out rainwater in monsoon season. He said that people had also encroached the drains by establishing buildings.

He said that drainage system in the city had collapsed which exposed during the rains. Citing chief secretary, Secretary Finance, director master plan Karachi, managing director Karachi Water & Sewerage Board, commissioner Karachi and administrator Karachi Municipal Corporation as respondents, he prayed to court to direct authorities concerned to remove all encroachments made on rainwater drains.

Earlier the court had issued notice to respondents on May 27.
