Karachi: Sindh High Court SHC has ordered police officials to ensure that ban imposed on excavation of sand and gravel in Karachi is effectively implemented.

This direction came on a petition filed by Syed Shiraz Ali, seeking action against police officers allegedly supporting illegal excavation of sand and gravel.

The petitioner submitted that sand and gravel were being lifted by contractors with the help of area police. He said the contractors without any fear were excavating the sand in large quantity, particularly in the areas like Mehmoodabad, Manzoor colony, Mehran town, Korangi Insutrial Area, Sharafi Goth and Shah Faisal colony.

The petitioner said that high court had already imposed ban on lifting of minerals and ordered the provincial authorities to ensure that a ban imposed on the excavation of minerals is strictly implemented.

He said that police officials by allowing illegal lifting of minerals have violated the court orders. He prayed to the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against them.

The court directed police officials concerned to file their replies regarding the contention of the petitioner. It directed police officials concerned to ensure that ban on mining of sand and gravel is implemented effectively.
