Sikandar Bosan Presides Over 35th Meeting Of Board Of Governors of PARC

Islamabad: Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research (MNFSR) has asked that Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) should establish a talent pool of scientists to ensure continuity in agricultural research and transfer of technology.

The minister was presiding over the 35th meeting of Board of Governors (BOG) of PARC here at latter’s Headquarters which was also attended by Seerat Asghar Jaura Secretary MNFSR and Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad Chairman PARC.

The Federal Minister said there was a need to re-organize PARC on modern lines keeping in view the agricultural needs of the country. The minister also stated that such an efficient mechanism should be established that ensures the reaching of modern agricultural research results to the doorstep of farmers.

The use of latest agricultural technology and innovation will increase farm profitability to the benefit of farmers and will also ensure food security for the country, said the minister.

Mr. Bosan also stressed the need to modernize agricultural infrastructure to achieve integrated development of agriculture, livestock, fisheries horticulture and forestry. The minister also said that diversification of rural economy will accelerate the pace of agricultural development which will contribute toward poverty reduction.

The Federal Minister appreciated PARC for taking steps in the development of agriculture in Balochistan province and for opening agricultural institutes there like Coastal Agricultural Research Institute Lasbella, Horticulture Research Institute Khuzdar, and Livestock Research Institute Turbat.

The minister also appreciated PARC management for successfully conducting independent third-party evaluation (ITPE) of PARC by the experts of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Washington, USA. The Federal Minister expressed hope that recommendations of the report will aid in chalking out future priorities for agricultural development and research.

During the course of meeting, Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad Chairman PARC also gave an overview of various on-going national and international coordinated agricultural research projects in the country.
