Six illegal hydrants removed in KWSB driveMay 28, 2013
KARACHI: On the directives of Managing Director Karachi Water & Sewerage Board Misbahuddin Farid, KWSB officers and staff commenced a drive against illegal hydrants in Baldia Town.
In this regard six illegal hydrants were raided today on Tuesday within Kattu Goth and Ittehad Town Baldia Town areas. These hydrants were stealing water from 33inch main line. During hour’s long operation, 6 illegal connections were disconnected; pumping machinery, motors and other equipment was confiscated.
Later on, newly elected MPA Kamran Akhtar also visited these sites to inspect the operation. On this occasion he stated that area residents are facing water shortage due to these illegal hydrants therefore this operation must continue unless all illegal hydrants are shutdown. He said that as Elected Public Representative it is our responsibility to help KW&SB eliminate all such entities in the better interest of public and we will help KWSB carry out operations. Directing D.S.P and S.H.O present on this occasion to ensure that hydrants shutdown do not start operation again he stated that as Elected Representatives we would not allow anyone to steal from public water supply.
According to the details, there are more than 25 illegal hydrants were operating in Baldia town stealing water from Main Trunk Lines. These illegal hydrants are supported by powerful entities, however, KWSB lead by DMD T&S Iftikhar Ahmed Khan and comprising chief engineer WTM Anwar Saeed, Superintendent Engineer Asif Qadri, Izhar Ahmed carrying out operation with the help of SSP West Shahjahan, SHO Zafar Iqbal and police party shutdown six illegal hydrants. During the operation all illegal connections were disconnected and all equipment was confiscated.
Baldia Town was facing acute water shortage due to these illegal hydrants stealing water from 33 inch main trunk line. These hydrants were using most of the water quota for Baldia Town through heavy machinery leaving the residents of Baldia Town and adjoining areas suffering.
MD KWSB pointed this to administration and police officials and with the help of Police; KWSB brought these illegal hydrants to an end. The operation would continue till all illegal hydrants in the area are shutdown. KWSB has also requested police officials to establish permanent police posts in these areas to monitor such entities.
MD KWSB also directed chief engineers to formulate a special team to monitor these areas and prevent mafia entities to restore these illegal connections again. This team will carry out surveys from time to time and ensure that these legal entities do not surface again. KWSB is currently carrying out operations against illegal hydrants throughout the city, which would continue till all illegal hydrants are shutdown.
