Karachi: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has vowed to lift the standard of the national game by developing and improving basic infrastructure at the grassroots level. The federation made this resolve at the conclusion of three day seminar at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore. The seminar was a part of ‘PHF Vision 2014-2018 Resurgence of Hockey’.

During the seminar, the participants, who were mainly of former Olympians, internationals, umpires and coaches, emphasized upon making a national strategy for the development of the game from the grass-root level.

They suggested that the federation should revamp the country-wide structure of the game with carefully designed measures which included development of the game in the clubs/schools/colleges by providing equipment and facilities at the grassroots level.

The participants recommended that 5-A side and 7-A side hockey should be introduced at the school level to attract the kids to play the game. They also suggested improvement in the standard of umpiring and other technical officials. It is also recommended that PHF academies should be fully equipped with the provision of modern training facilities.

A long term plan under the name of Hockey Welfare Organization was another notable recommendation which was made during the seminar. It has been recommended that all top players of the national teams should be insured which include their medical treatment as well.

It also recommended to cater the financial problems of the deserving former Olympians and internationals.

PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid said that the federation intended to make a consensus for formulating short term and long term plans to uplift the national sport.

“The federation also wants that the coaching, umpiring and technical officials should come under a proper accreditation system with a certain education and qualification in hockey,” he said.

He added that the federation would also invite other former senior Olympians to incorporate their suggestion in the PHF Vision 2014-2018 Resurgence of Hockey.
