Sports: Hockey: Qasim and Rana are also responsible for downfall of hockey: ShahnazSeptember 12, 2013
Karachi: Former Olympian Shahnaz Sheikh on Thursday said that only Pakistan Hockey Federation PHF Secretary Asif Bajwa’s resignation would not be enough as President Qasim Zia and Associate Secretary Rana Mujahid were also responsible for the downfall of the national sport.
“All top officials of the federation were responsible for hockey’s downfall. Bajwa had his role in bringing down the standards but Qasim and Rana Mujahid were also equally responsible,” Shahnaz told PPI.
Rana Mujahid, who had on many occasions accompanied junior team to important tournaments either as manager or head coach or both, has been made secretary after Bajwa’s resignation.
Shahnaz said that the step taken by Asif Bajwa to resign while others kept on working as usual was taken to elude a complete sacking of the federation’s top brass.
“The axe was hanging on them all after Pakistan failed to make the cut for the World Cup. So the resignation of one of the top official was taken to confuse to avoid complete sacking,” Shahnaz said.
However, Shahnaz said that imposing adhoc on the federation and conducting scrutiny of the teams and clubs and then conducting elections would be the only right decision.
“Elections under present setup would have no impact. Free and fair elections could only be conducted after scrutiny of clubs and teams by an impartial adhoc committee,” Shahnaz said.
Shahnaz said that the current officials had immense resources at their disposal and they completed their tenures without any difficulty, however, after failing to deliver, they should now step down themselves.
“They had every during their tenure but yet they failed to deliver. So I think they should now step down themselves,” Shahnaz stressed.
