KARACHI: Expected finalists Aqeel Khan and Yasir Khan cruised into the quarter-finals of men’s singles event with contrasting results in Eastern Testing Services PTF Ranking Tennis Championship 2013 on Wednesday at Syed Dilawar Abbas PTF Tennis Complex in Islamabad.
Karachi-based Pakistan No 1 Aqeel faced little resistance from his last-16 round opponent Hasnain Manzoor and registered an immaculate 6-0, 6-0 victory.
However, Yasir, who is a younger brother of Aqeel, was taken to full stretch of the game by his opponent Ahmed Babar. Yasir took the first set easily by 6-1 score, but Ahmed put stiff resistance in the second set and eventually won it in tie-breaks by 7-6(5) to level the score-line.
However, Yasir bounced back strongly in the final set winning it by 6-1 score to confirm his presence in the last-eight round.
Meanwhile, wildcard entrant Faizan Khurram also cruised into the quarter-finals after he dispatched Malik Hamza, recording a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory.
The others to secure place in the quarter-finals were Ahmed Chaudhry, Muhammad Abid, Shahzad Khan, Sanaullah Khan and Usman Ejaz.
Top seeded duo of siblings Aqeel and Yasir also secured their place in men’s doubles semi-finals after defeating Sadan ul Haq and Faizan Khurram by 6-2, 6-0 score in the quarter-finals.
Shahzad Khan and Usman Ejaz also advanced into the semifinals after beating M Mudassir and Imad Amer by 6-3, 6-4 score. Imran Shaukat and Malik Abdul Rehman overpowered Sanaullah Khan and Ahmed Chaudhry by 6-4, 6-2 score, while M Abid and Usman Rafiq thrashed Ahmed Babar and Saad Mubarik by 6-3, 6-3 score to enter the pre-finals.
Unseeded Zaid Mujahid produced the only upset in boys U18 singles event by beating eighth seed Abdal Haider by 6-1, 6-4 score.
Favourite Muhammad Mudassir, Hamza Bin Asif, Hasnain Manzoor, Saad Zafar, Syed Nofil Kaleem, M Muzamil and Arham Atiq also qualified for the quarter-finals of the event.
