Suicide blast hits NPP candidate convoy; three injured

Shikarpur: Three people were injured when a suicide bomber attacked the convoy of National People’s Party’s NPP NA202 candidate, Dr Ibrahim Jatoi, on Indus Highway near Toll Plaza Shikarpur on Wednesday.

The incident occurred when Jatoi was on his way to Shikarpur from his village Napearabad in his bulletproof land cruiser vehicle as part of election campaign in NA202 constituency. Jatoi remained safe, however, his bulletproof vehicle was badly damaged in the blast.

According to eye witnesses, a 30yearold man, who was hiding behind a tree, struck the motorcade with his bike, causing explosion. The body of the suicide bomber broke into two parts and was brought to Civil Hospital Shikarpur for an autopsy. The injured were rushed to different hospitals for medical treatment.

Sources said that one suspected injured man was caught by people on the spot and handed over to police. The bomb weighed 15 kilograms, while the attacker was wearing double bulletproof jackets, the police said. Further investigation into the incident was underway, they added.

Soon after the suicide blast, Shikarpur-Khanpur road was blocked and a shutterdown strike was observed in Shikarpur in protest against the incident.

Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh PMLF candidate for PS11 Shikarpur3, Mir Allah Dino Bhayo PPP candidate for PS12 Khanpur4, Agha Taimoor Khan Pathan PPP candidate for PS11 Shikarpur3, Aftab Shaban Mirani PPP candidate for NA202 Shikarpur1, Aqeel Abbas Soomro and other politicians have strongly condemned the blast and demanded of the caretaker government to conduct an immediate probe into the attack.

The political leaders and nationalists in their separate press conferences have also appealed to the present regime and the Election Commission of Pakistan to ensure provision of foolproof security to the election candidates and general public in Shikarpur district.

They said that it was 3rd bomb blast in district Shikarpur in short span of time, out of which first occurred during Muharramul Haram on Dr Ibrahim Jatoi and Mir Abid Hussain Jatoi at their village Napearabad, while 2nd happened at Haji Dargah Mari Sharif in which Gaddi Nasheen Syed Hajan Shah and four other persons were killed.

The leaders demanded postponement of election activities today to express sympathy with Ibrahim Jatoi and other injured.
