Thar children deaths: SA opposition submits requisition to call assembly sessionMarch 12, 2014
KARACHI: Opposition parties in Sindh Assembly on Wednesday submitted a requisition, demanding Sindh governor to summon assembly session in order to discuss deaths of children in drought-hit Thar and current situation of relief activities.
The requisition was signed by provincial legislators from Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) and submitted by the opposition leader in the Assembly, Faisal Sabzwari to Secretary Sindh Assembly G M Farooq.
Talking to media at Sindh Assembly, Faisal Sabzwari said that current situation in district Tharparkar was very alarming as the provincial government had failed to overcome this situation despite of no rainfall in the area during last year.
“Every time when there is no rainfall in Thar district, the provincial government declares emergency in that area but this time they reacted very late which resulted in the deaths of several children due to malnutrition,” he said.
He said that the government had not take serious action against the people responsible of negligence and instead of taking action against higher-ups in the provincial government, low level officers were either suspended or transferred from their posts.
He demanded Sindh government to take stern action against every single person responsible of this situation that caused deaths of several children.
“People of Tharparkar are not satisfied with the progress made by provincial government in the relief process and if the incumbent ministers start criticizing government then what is left behind for the provincial government to continue this setup,” he said.
He said that if the drought situation had created disastrous situation in the beginning of the summer season then what will happen in next couple of months when the hot season would be on its peak.
Speaking on the occasion, Khawaja Izharul Hassan said that his party would also ask government regarding millions of funds sanctioned for the betterment of situation in rural areas of the province. “We had unanimously approved millions of funds for development in the urban areas but it seemed that none of the money was spent on the betterment of people after witnessing this drastic situation in Thar.”
Moreover, MQM also submitted a resolution in the provincial assembly condemning Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Chief Imran Khan over his statements in support of Taliban.
Talking to media at Sindh Assembly, Syed Khalid Ahmed said that MQM has filed a resolution condemning comments in favour of Taliban by Imran Khan and PTI’s recent move to offer Taliban for opening their office in Pakistan.
“Imran Khan’s comments in favour of TTP are hurting sentiments of thousands of people who lost their loved ones in their attacks,” he said.
