Traders demand audit before tariff raiseJune 4, 2013
Karachi: All Pakistan Organization of Small Traders and Cottage Industries APOST&CI Tuesday demanded of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority Nepra to order audit of the accounts of Karachi Electric Supply Company KESC through reliable auditors before allowing tariff raise to the utility.
APOST&CI Karachi chapter president Mehmood Hamid welcomed the decision to open a Nepra office in Karachi and said drastic reforms are overdue in electricity sector. He said Karachi, a city of some 20million souls, generates 67percent revenue of the federal government but its citizens face immense problems in getting electricity. He said prolonged load shedding, extra billing and meter tempering have baffled the electricity consumers of Karachi.
He said the costly copper electricity supply cables of Karachi are being replaced with cheap sliver cables, which is looting of the assets of the city. He said the cheap silver cables also result in improper electricity supply, huge fluctuations and losses due to damage to electrical appliances. He urged the concerned authorities to give the electricity consumers of Karachi justice and save them from fleecing.
