Jerusalem (UNA-OIC) The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) remains committed to continuing its vital services for Palestinian refugees, and that this commitment will not be affected by the intention of the United States to withhold aid from the Agency, UNRWA spokesman Sami Mushasha has affirmed.

The spokesman said of the total UNRWA budget (regular, emergency and project budget) of $1.3 billion, the US donates $300 million of the Agency’s total contributions. He explained that even if this year’s US financial pledges are not translated into reality, UNRWA will not leave Palestine refugees alone, and will continue to operate in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, in addition to its presence and services in East Jerusalem.

Mushasha stated that UNRWA delivers its services to more than 5.9 million Palestinian refugees registered with the Agency. He added that UNRWA’s 711 schools, 143 medical clinics and all social, relief and credit services, as well as the technical and vocational education in its centers, will continue uninterrupted while the Agency strives to provide protection to Palestinian refugees and preserve their dignity and rights.

The spokesman stressed that great efforts are being made by the UNRWA administration to mobilize financial resources, expand the donor base and explore funding mechanisms from new entities such as the World Bank, Arab and international support funds, and to go to sources of support coming from Zakat funds and others, in an endeavor to maintain services and meet the commitments of UNRWA and the international community toward Palestine refugees.
