KARACHI: Sindh High Court on Thursday stayed till further orders the verification of thumb impressions of votes cast at 69 polling stations of NA208, a National Assembly seat in Jaccobabad won by the candidate of the Pakistan People’s Party.

A stay order came on a petition filed by Ejaz Hussain Jakhrani, Member National Assembly belonging to PPP, who moved the court against impugned election tribunal order for thumb impressions verification by NADRA.

A division bench of SHC, headed by Justice Faisal Arab, also issued notice to the Election Commission of Pakistan, presiding officer of the election tribunal at Sukkur and others and adjourned the hearing till September 19.

The petitioner submitted through his counsel that he secured 51025 votes and was declared successful candidate. Respondent, rival candidate Illahi Bux Soomro secured 45,801 and lost seat to him with margin of 5224 votes.

He stated that Soomro approached election tribunal against his success and sought verification of thumb impression of votes cast at 69 polling station of constituency.

The petitioner said that on August 29, 2013 the election tribunal ordered verification of thumb impression of votes of 69 polling stations. Hence, he prayed to the court to set aside the impugned order of election tribunal as it was passed without taking into consideration his submission.

The division bench suspended the order passed by tribunal till further orders.
