Karachi: Former Pakistan hockey Olympian Ahmed Alam on Wednesday said that only the title triumph in the ongoing Asia Cup in Malaysia would help greenshirts win respect of fans back home.

“I am happy to see our team winning group matches with big margin but the team should understand that only winning the title in the championship would help them earn respect among its fans,” Ahmed Alam said.

He said that the team should focus on its main purpose of being in Malaysia and that was to win the title and qualify for the World Cup 2014.

“The team must perform and clinch the title as it is the only last clear chance remaining for the greenshirts to qualify for the World Cup,” he said.

Ahmed said that few players, who missed the Hockey World League, came back from injuries and the team has shown some improvement.

He said that seasoned goalkeeper Salman Akbar has to prove his selection by the team management when the team clashes with tough South Korean side.

“He must prove his selection by performing well in the remaining matches,” Ahmed, who was himself a goalkeeper.

Ahmed hoped that the team would perform well in the remaining matches and beat South Korea on Friday to confirm its place in the climax of the event.

After winning all of its three matches in Group A against Japan, Malaysia and Chinese Taipei, Pakistan has qualified for the semifinals.
