Islamabad: Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and SAFRON Amir Muqam has reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to safe and dignified repatriation of refugees. He was talking to a delegation led by United Nations Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General Indrika Ratwatte in Islamabad today.
According to Radio Pakistan, during the meeting, Amir Muqam highlighted Pakistan's longstanding role in hosting refugees. He stated that the country has graciously hosted Afghan refugees for more than four decades, reflecting its humanitarian commitment despite economic and security challenges.
The Minister reiterated that Pakistan remains firmly committed to ensuring the safe, dignified, orderly, and voluntary repatriation of refugees in accordance with international norms and bilateral understandings. He emphasized the importance of robust cross-border coordination and accurate data-sharing for effective return management.
Welcoming continued collaboration, Amir Muqam expressed Pakistan's readiness to engage technically with the United Nations to strengthen data systems and improve modalities for refugee returns. In his remarks, Indrika Ratwatte acknowledged Pakistan's decades-long hospitality toward refugees and discussed ongoing cooperation between Pakistan and UN agencies to support refugees and host communities.
The discussion concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to continued dialogue and cooperation to address refugee-related challenges in a coordinated and humane manner.
