Pakistan and World Bank Discuss Strategies for Economic Growth


Islamabad: A delegation of Executive Directors and Alternate Executive Directors from the World Bank Group met with Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal in Islamabad today to discuss support for sustainable economic growth in Pakistan.



According to Radio Pakistan, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal highlighted the government’s introduction of the Uraan Pakistan 5Es National Transformational Plan, which prioritizes an export-led growth strategy as its first ‘E’. The minister stressed the necessity of increasing Pakistan’s exports to sixty billion dollars over the next five years. He also outlined the government’s dedication to transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable and green energy sources.



The Planning Minister emphasized the significance of public-private partnerships in driving economic growth and the essential role of women in the national economy. He noted the government’s efforts to ensure active participation of women in the economy, stating that their involvement is crucial for sustainable growth. Additionally, the minister called for the international community to consider innovative financial instruments to assist vulnerable countries in addressing climate change challenges. He pointed to the devastating floods of 2022 that affected Pakistan’s poorest regions, advocating for a development-focused approach.



The discussions also addressed strategic issues concerning the World Bank Group’s engagements in Pakistan, indicating ongoing support for the country’s inclusive and sustainable growth. The delegation’s visit was intended to strengthen collaboration between Pakistan and the World Bank Group, with a focus on sustainable and inclusive economic expansion.
