QAU VC Reveals the Real Reason Why University Cannot be Drug-Free

Vice-Chancellor Quaid-i-Azam University says that land grabbers are making it difficult to make university campuses drug-free.

700 acres of prime university land is being grabbed under the nose of the federal government and university can’t fight the grabbers.

He was briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Narcotics Control which met today at Islamabad under the Chairmanship of MNA Salahuddin Ayubi.

Briefing the committee on the ground situation, vice-chancellor QAU, Muhammad Ali, informed the committee that out of 23 km, the 11 km boundary wall has been constructed around the university however, there are some disputes regarding the land due to which the 700 acres land was occupied with unauthorized occupants.

This illegal occupation is a major cause of illegal activities near the university campus and the spread of narcotics among students. He said various police operations have been carried out with the help of the district administration but the illegal land occupants are a serious threat to the very existence of the peaceful campus of QAU.

He further emphasized that most of the kiosks selling fast food and general items to the students existing outside the premises of the university are involved in drug-related activities.

He also told that they have made Quaid-e-Azam University a smoke-free campus.

Besides the Federal Minister for Narcotics Control, MNAs Gul Dad Khan, Muhammad Iqbal Khan, Nusrat Wahid, Andleeb Abbas, Ch. Zulfiqar Ali Bhinder, Shahida Akhter Ali, Mohsin Dawar, and officials of the Ministry and its attached Departments were present in the meeting.

Javed Miandad Reveals How Pakistan Can Beat India in T20 World Cup

Former Pakistan captain and head coach, Javed Miandad, has a piece of advice for Green Shirts ahead of their T20 World Cup encounter against their arch-rival India on 24 October at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Speaking at a news channel, Miandad said that the team will have to play as a single unit to beat India and that the team’s reliance on a few individual players will only hurt the cause.

“The team needs to play with coordination. Each player needs to chip in with what they can because relying on 1 or 2 players will hurt Pakistan’s chances in the World Cup,” said Miandad.

Miandad pointed out that there is a chance that players who generally perform well will also do so during the crucial match. He said that consistency would be key to beat India.

He suggested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja should focus on cricket and winning matches as it will boost Pakistan’s image in the cricket world.

Pakistan cricket team is currently preparing for the mega event at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) under the interim head coach Saqlain Mushtaq and the bowling consultant Vernon Philander.

The Men in Green will depart for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 15 October, where the T20 World Cup will be played from 17 October to 14 November.

Batting Consultant, Mathew Hayden, will join the Pakistan cricket team in the UAE ahead of their encounter with India on the 24th of this month.

Before that, Pakistan will play two warm-up matches against West Indies and South Africa on 18 and 20 October, respectively. Both matches will be broadcast live on PTV Sports.

SHC Orders Conversion of Fatima Jinnah’s Residence Into a Medical College

The Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered on Wednesday to convert Qasr-e-Fatima, the residence of Fatima Jinnah, into a medical college.

The directives came on a petition filed by Fatima Jinnah’s cousin, Hussain G. Walji that had been pending since 1971.

In its order, the SHC said that a trust should be set up to run the affairs of the medical college, which should also include separate hostels for male and female students.

As all parties agreed to the arrangement, the court also suggested some names to run the trust, including Dr. Abdul Bari of Indus Hospital, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation’s (SIUT) Dr. Adib Rizvi, Justice (retd) Sarmad Jalal Osmany, and Justice (retd) Fahim Siddiqui, and directed authorities seek their consent in this regard.

During the previous hearing, the court had barred authorities from using the term ‘Mohatta Palace’ for Fatima Jinnah’s property. The court had suggested that the palace should now be called ‘Qasr-e-Fatima’.

The SHC had also directed authorities to submit a record of all the activities and income generated from the building during the last 30 years.

What Is Mohatta Palace And Who Owns It?

The Mohatta Palace was built in the 1920s and is now a declared heritage site. Designed by Agha Ahmed Hussain, the first known Muslim architect of the sub-continent, the palace was built for Shivratan Mohatta, a successful Marwari entrepreneur, according to well-known Karachi historian, Usman Damohi.

The beautiful palace housed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after independence and later served as the residence of Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah.

After the death of Fatima Jinnah, the building went to her sister Shireen Jinnah, however, it was disputed by her other cousins, and was consequently sealed in 1971. However, in 1994, the property was turned into a museum under the Mohatta Palace Gallery Trust.
